The great Irish Poet Michael Longley is dead. He was beloved by readers of poetry on both sides of the pond, and in particular by the Poets' Theatre family. In October 2019 Michael and his wife, the literary critic Edna Longley, came over to be officially enrolled, both of them, in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. PT Artistic Director Bob Scanlan and I took the couple out to Concord MA for a nice foamy lunch, a visit to the graves of Emerson, Alcott and Thoreau, and then a walk out the "dike" at Great Meadows, where Bob snapped us sitting on a bench in the autumn twilight."Let the Irish vessel lie/ Emptied of its poetry."

BLUE FRONT is a poetic collage by prize-winning local poet Martha Collins. It explores her father's experience as a small boy of a lynching in Cairo, Illinois in 1909. Beautiful, contemplative, powerful and insightful, Blue Front delves deeply into the American struggle with racism, mob violence, and cultural responsibility.
BLUE FRONT has been adapted for the stage by Poets’ Theatre Literary Director, David Gullette, and we want to ask our friends to help us give this play its maximum dramatic and lyrical intensity. On October 24th and again on the 25th at the New Rep’s Black Box at the Arsenal Center, we’ll present a workshop performance of the play, followed by an honest and open discussion between the audience, the cast, the poet, the adapter, and the director, our President, Bob Scanlan.
